Easy to Follow Ideas to Be Safe on the Road

There's nothing like the freedom that owning a motorcycle allows, but while it's important to take advantage of all that your motorcycle has to offer, it's important to enjoy it safely. In this post, Cardey4everoil has some easy to follow ideas to keep you safe on the road.

Tips to Keep You Safe on the Road

  • Don't forget to wear a helmet, even if it's a short ride to the shops, or just up and down the street. There's a reason they're called accidents - because they aren't planned, so don't get caught off guard without basic protection that could save your skull.
  • In addition to the helmet, the rest of your riding gear is also important. If you are just wearing jeans, T-shirt, and sandals, you are begging for trouble. The right gear will not just protect you from road rash in a crash, but from cold, bugs, debris, and other hazards as well. Leather pants and jacket, preferably in bright colors so that car drivers can see you, and eye protection will keep you safest.
  • Be extra wary of other drivers. When riding, consider each vehicle to be a potential threat and always maintain safe distances and speeds when navigating traffic and other vehicles. Road safety is a two way street, so do your part and stay alert.
  • Avoid bad weather. It is harder to see in the rain, especially at night, and the slippery road reduces your ability to react to dangers. If you have to ride in the rain, be aware that the most dangerous time is right after it starts raining, and that your motorcycle will be more sensitive to movements than normal. Breaking into a slide is much easier in these conditions, so be extra careful with the brakes, throttle, and steering.
  • Don't let your pride get in the way. If you're new to riding a motorcycle, or even your new motorcycle, take some time and practice riding in an empty car park or an unused area where you can get a feel for your bike and how it handles and performs.
  • Get antilock brakes. The extra investment is worth the peace of mind they provide. Bikes with antilock brakes are 37% less likely to be in a fatal crash than those without them, so give yourself the extra chance.
  • Check the basics: tires, lights, fluid levels and brakes. At the least, each time that you start your bike, check these three things. If you are planning on riding to a new location, consider the condition of your tires and whether they are up to the task. Don't get stuck with damaged tires and no way to get out.
